Highlife music icon Akosua Adjepong has expressed her disillusionment with the current condition of the Ghanaian music industry. In a recent interview with RAJAB Media GH, she highlighted a notable lack of dedication among key players, which she believes is a major impediment to the industry's advancement.
Adjepong emphasized that Ghana possesses a wealth of diverse musical rhythms waiting to be explored, but regrettably, the music industry lags behind compared to other nations such as Nigeria and Senegal, where musicians are effectively harnessing this musical diversity.
Drawing from her experiences in Seychelles, where she encountered music from various countries including Nigeria, Senegal, and Mali, she raised the question of why Ghana has not capitalized on these rich rhythms. She even suggested that Nigerians are currently excelling in playing Highlife music, which traditionally originated in Ghana.
"I had the opportunity to visit Seychelles, and there, I heard music representing various nations, including Nigeria, Senegal, and Mali. Now, the question that arises is why Ghana has not fully embraced these diverse rhythms," she queried.
"As things stand today, it appears that Nigerians may even be performing Highlife music more proficiently than Ghanaians. If you take a moment to listen to songs from Senegal and Mali, you'll discern that they share similarities with rhythms from the Northern region of Ghana. So, why are we facing these challenges? I will continue to stress that the necessary measures have not been taken," she remarked.
These comments come at a time when many creatives within the music industry have voiced their concerns regarding its current state and the need for growth, particularly in light of the progress achieved by their Nigerian counterparts.
