Supreme Court Sets Date for FDA Ban on Celebrity Alcohol Advertisment

The case involving Artiste Manager Mark Darlington Osae, who took legal action against the Food and Drugs Authority (FDA) challenging the ban on celebrities advertising alcoholic beverages, has been scheduled for hearing on January 17, 2024, by the Supreme Court.

The ban was implemented in 2015, and Osae, along with others in the creative industry, argues that it violates constitutional articles that guarantee equality before the law and prohibit discrimination. The FDA defends the ban, stating that it aims to protect minors from the influence of alcohol.

Osae initiated the legal challenge in 2011, and the case that was called on November 15, 2023, was adjourned to January 17, 2024. Notably, popular figures like Sarkodie and Bullet, along with their entourages, were present at the Supreme Court during the proceedings. Videos circulating on social media showed Sarkodie in formal attire, accompanied by his manager, Angel. Other industry stakeholders, including representatives from King Promise and R2Bees' camps, were also seen engaging with lawyers after the court proceedings. CEO of Rufftown Records, Bullet, who manages Wendy Shay, interacted with the media at the court's premises.
