Barbie Movie Hits $1bn Mark At Global Box Office.

Just 17 days following its release, the Barbie movie has achieved the remarkable feat of crossing the billion-dollar mark in box office earnings, as announced by Warner Bros., the film's distributor. The statement released on Sunday revealed that the movie is set to conclude the weekend with an impressive $1.03 billion (£808 million) in global ticket sales. This accomplishment marks a significant milestone as Greta Gerwig becomes the first female director to achieve such a feat on her own.

According to Warner Bros., this achievement stands as a pivotal moment. Jeff Goldstein, the President of Domestic Distribution in the US, commented that Greta Gerwig's unique vision brought the iconic cross-generational character and her universe to life in an amusing, heartfelt, and captivating narrative, effectively saturating the world with a pink hue.

Goldstein went on to note that the lengthy queues at theaters and the frequent return visits by audiences demonstrate the revival of cinema following the setbacks caused by pandemic-related lockdowns and competition from streaming services.

Although other female directors have been part of films that surpassed the $1 billion mark, they had collaborated with others. For instance, the animated hits Frozen and its sequel exceeded $1.4 billion in total box office revenue and were co-directed by Jennifer Lee and Chris Buck. Additionally, Captain Marvel, co-directed by Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck alongside its star Brie Larson, garnered over $1.1 billion in earnings.

Critics have showered the pink-themed movie with acclaim, and it has sparked a wave of selfies taken alongside Barbie doll displays placed in UK cinemas. The film, featuring Margot Robbie as Barbie and Ryan Gosling as Ken, has raked in $459 million domestically in the US and an additional $572 million internationally.
